What it means

The Sam Altman RAM memes joke that PC owners now have to hide their memory sticks (RAM, or DIMMs) from OpenAI. They play on a real shortage of computer memory and on a remark by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman that DRAM sitting in personal computers is a poor use of limited supply.

Typical examples recast Altman as a film interrogator or villain searching homes for RAM, or show users guarding the memory slots in their PCs. The joke is about the remark and the shortage, not a claim that anyone is literally taking people's hardware.

Origin

On the Cheeky Pint podcast episode released October 29, 2026, Altman said: "from a global allocation perspective, actually, it's quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world's limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used 5% of the time." He was talking about running AI models locally versus in data centers. Tech outlets including The Verge and Tom's Hardware reported the quote on October 30.

Memes followed within days. On November 1, 2026, u/famsteve20015 posted "Kiss your ram" to r/memes, an image macro captioned "You're hiding a 16gb ram in your PC, are you not?", which reached #1 on the subreddit's top posts of the day. A post on r/dankmemes, "Point out to me the DIMM sockets where they are hiding," reached #1 there, and X listed the reaction as a trending story.
